JUSTIN MCMANUS

Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association (PANPA) awards
News photograph of the year

Outstanding photography was recognized at the PANPA Awards, with The Age's Justin McManus winning News Photograph of the Year for one of his photographs taken during Victoria's bushfires last February.

September 2009

Justin received a perfect score of 100 for his photograph, about which the judge said: “This is a silent and poignant photo, and was set apart from other images of the wildfire through the sensitive eye of the photographer. The photographer conveyed the tragedy of the event with a compassionate dignity for the victim. The image brings the horrible reality of the fires to readers in a subtle, haunting realization”.
