KATHARINE MURPHY

Paul Lyneham award for excellence in press gallery journalism

National affairs correspondent, Katharine Murphy, has won this year's prestigious Paul Lyneham award for excellence in press galllery journalism. Katharine is the first journalist from The Age to win this prestigious award. Murphy submitted a collection of notebooks, features and opinion pieces charting the final months of the Howard government.

The judges said the collection would make the perfect contents for a time capsule of the year of
Kevin Rudd’s rise.

“Katharine’s pieces are succinct, observant and impartial - written with style, verve and a dash of
wit,” the judges said. “Katharine Murphy has drawn on her decade of reporting and analysis and
produced an impressive portfolio of press gallery journalism.”

The judges would like to congratulate Katharine on her win, along with this year’s other entrants
who have added still more prestige to this important award and its inspiration, the late Paul
Lyneham – one of the Gallery’s legends.

Katharine received a $5000 prize, sponsored by the National Australia Bank. Her name will also be
inscribed on a perpetual trophy, designed by cartoonist Bruce Petty, on permanent display at the
National Press Club of Australia.

National Australia Bank Group Executive General Manager George Frazis said: “We wish to
congratulate Katharine and all the entrants. We are proud to support this award and, through the
award, help to recognise and reward excellence in journalism in the Federal Parliamentary Press
Gallery”.
