The Age wins safety award

Friday, October 27, 2006

The Age Print Centre at Tullamarine has won a major WorkSafe Victoria award which is expected to lead to a reduction in injuries in the printing industry worldwide.

A panel of judges representing industry, unions, employer associations and Worksafe Victoria chose 22 finalists from more than 100 entries.

Staff at the Print Centre invented a mechanical aid for the removal of 360 kilo turbo units which will significantly reduce the risk of sprain or strain injuries. Previously, the units had to be removed manually from the press for maintenance or replacement with the accompanying risk of the units being dropped or causing serious injury.

Chris Monaghan, general manager of The Age Print Centre said: “The award is recognition of a great team effort and a focus on safety at the plant. It is also pleasing to know that staff elsewhere in the industry will also benefit from this invention.”

Worksafe Victoria’s Executive Director, John Merritt, said: “The genuine commitment we see every year through these awards gives us a real buzz to know our messages are getting through and being embraced by so many. We want every Victorian worker to return home safely to their family and friends everyday.
