Photographic exhibition – The Age of Racing
Friday, October 13, 2006
With the Spring Carnival in full swing, The Age today launched a free outdoor photographic exhibition at Southbank in Melbourne covering racing and in particular, the Spring Carnival.

Featuring more than 100 photos drawn from The Age's photographic collection, the exhibition captures some of racing’s most memorable moments and some of the great names of the turf including Carbine, Phar Lap, Bernborough, Saintly, Might and Power, and Makybe Diva.
“Australia's love of racing stretches back two centuries. For half that time, the camera has frozen memorable moments that make our hearts race, especially in spring. Australia may have ridden on the sheep's back, but on Saturdays our hopes rode on horses”, Andrew Rule, senior writer at The Age says in an introduction to the exhibition.
The Age of Racing exhibition was on display at Southbank from October 13 to December 1, 2006.

“The exhibition is not meant to be definitive or exhaustive. It is rather a celebration of racing and its contribution to Melbourne and Victoria – the big moments as well as the light-hearted. It covers racing in all its aspects from the 1890s through to the present day. But it has one common theme: great photography”, communications director of The Age, Nigel Henham said.
The Age of Racing follows previous exhibitions at Federation Square on Australian Rules football, Commonwealth Games, and The Age's 150th anniversary.
This year The Age is official newspaper of the Caulfield Carnival and has naming rights to the Caulfield Guineas – Australia’s premier three-year old race. The Age is also sponsoring the Group 2 Age Classic on Emirates Stakes Day, the final day of the carnival at Flemington.
